Sonsie on Newbury

sonsie newbury boston

Our last day before going home to San Francisco for the holidays, we took a stroll down the adorable Newbury Street and snagged prime seating at Sonsie for lunch. Sonsie has great atmosphere and a great menu, including a special gluten free one which includes pizzas!

The service was painfully slow (we were there for 2-3 hours), but the food was delicious and the festive ambiance was warming -they even added faux frost to the windows!

The mussels came with a great buttery sauce.

I ordered the gluten-free pizza you see above, with fresh tomatoes, basil pesto, mozzarella, pecorino and soppressata. It was light yet scrumptious - each ingredient was so fresh and full of flavor.

The Caesar salad at Sonsie was filling yet healthy, and came with anchovies on top! It's not a real Caesar without anchovies, after all. The fish coupled with the parmesan cheese made for great flavor in the salad.

Last but not least, this dark chocolate fudge with hazelnut was the perfect way to end a delicious meal. It wasn't too rich, but just sweet enough.

All in all, if the service had been a tad faster it would have gotten a 10/10 rating in my book. We were there for over 2 hours, but granted this is probably one of the busiest times of the year for Sonsie and Newbury Street in general, seeing as it's the last weekend before Christmas.

Lauren Conrad Bow Sweater + OTK Boots + Kate Spade

Lauren Conrad OTK Boots Kate Spade

Guys, I went a little crazy with Black Friday shopping this year - who's with me? There were so many great deals it was hard not to splurge a little. The bright side is, I have all these exciting new items checked off my list and ready to wear for the holiday season!

Take this Lauren Conrad Bow Sweater for instance. I've been a fan of LC since the days of Laguna Beach back in 2004 (can you believe that was 11 years ago?), and ever since I heard she started a fashion line I've been wanting to grab something cute from it. I'm a big fan of her feminine and classy style, so this bow sweater was perfect for me. It's amazingly comfy and one of those sweaters you can curl up, read a book, and even nap in.

These Crown Vintage Lulu OTK boots from DSW are another bucket list item for the season, and a steal at $45! My only wish is that they went a little further over the knee. But they're super comfy and I didn't even really have to break them in! I also love these because they're a great excuse to wear my favorite leg warmers from Modern and Chic Boutique.

Obviously the final item I'm over-the-moon for is my first ever Kate Spade bag! This Sawyer Street Maxi in pillbox red is just too cute, and big enough to hold everything from my scarves and hats to holiday gifts!

There's nothing like staying cozy in cooler sweater weather months!

Brunch at Canary Square

canary square brunch boston

I don't always venture to Jamaica Plain, but when I do, we brunch! Our friends who live in JP showed us this adorable local spot called Canary Square. Here we dined on traditional American food, over wooden tables and surrounded by brick walls and chalkboards. They even have Sunday Movie Nights, which sound so fun!

My scrambled egg plate was delicious, though they were overly generous with the salt on the potatoes - especially since I always top mine off with salt-filled ketchup anyway!

The burger was good too, though again you can see how much salt they put on the fries! Next time we might ask to hold off on that extra salt.

Some may find one drawback of Canary Square to be the noise level. It's a family neighborhood, so don't be surprised by children running around and jumping on nearby benches. If you can get past that and some excess salt on your potatoes, you'll be in for a treat!

Comment Challenge: What's your stance on excess salt? A welcome treat, or not good to eat?

El Pelon

el pelon boston

As many of you know, I'm from San Francisco originally. SF has some really amazing Mexican food, which is one thing we've had a hard time finding here in Boston. I kept hearing that El Pelon is some of the best Mexican in the city, so of course I had to try it! Read on to see how it compared.

el pelon boston

First of all, El Pelon is on this cute block aptly named "restaurant row" by the locals. Here you'll find a melting pot of cuisines, including traditional American, Thai, Greek, Persian, Japanese, French, and Mexican. It's great because you can go with a group, all get different meals, and meet outside on the cute patio to eat together.

I ordered the chicken quesadilla on a corn tortilla. It's hard to tell from the picture but it comes with 2 quesadillas. The cheese is gooey, the chicken is cooked well, and the mild tomato salsa really adds a lot of flavor. It would be a little plain without the salsa though.

This is the Pescado Tacos de la Casa, aka house fish tacos. They were really good and I loved their bright, colorful presentation!

One wall is filled with framed pictures of patrons wearing El Pelon gear all over the world. They also have a pretty incredible contest where you can win free burritos for a year if you down 15 habanero peppers in 15 minutes! There were only 4 people on their champion list for the contest. The authenticity of the venue and the decorations really reminded me of some of the great Mexican places back home!

Comment Challenge: What's your favorite Mexican dish? I'm obsessed with quesadillas and enchiladas!
