I have a confession to make: I have a horrible skincare routine! I basically just use bar soap, exfoliator and moisturizer (*gasp!* it’s true, this is why I’m not a beauty blogger). While this gets the cleaning job done, it really doesn’t do my skin any other favors. So when Kiehl’s offered to have me stop by for a consultation and try their newly launched Kiehl’s Apothecary Preparations, I jumped at the chance. Since then, I’ve been trying their line for a couple weeks now and I can’t wait to share my experience with you all!
Kiehl’s is really unique in the world of skincare. It began 165 years ago as an old-school apothecary (which is a place where drugs and medicine are sold,) in NYC’s East Village. Today, their skincare line is still tailor-made to each individual using modern medicine such as retinol.
The Kiehl’s Apothecary Preparations consultation only took a few minutes, and they truly customized my skincare formula to the specific concerns I have for your skin. They asked me to rank how much of a priority it is for me to improve different aspects of my skin, including lines / wrinkles, skin tone, texture, pores, and visible redness. Then, they created a special formula which caters to my top 2 skin priorities – for me, this included fine lines and texture.
Above are the 3 ingredients to my specific formula. Everyone receives the one on the left – it’s a skin strengthening concentrate called squalene which is a compound found in olive oil (aka really good for your skin)! The middle serum contains retinol, which reduces fine lines and wrinkles. Including this one in my formula means I need to apply it at night and use sunscreen during the day, since retinol makes your skin more sensitive to the sun. The third serum exfoliates and improves the texture of the skin.
They sent me home with my skincare formula (how cool is that old school box + label it comes in?), instruction booklet, toner and spot treatment. I love the gentle toner after cleansing my face, and I haven’t even had a spot pop up to check the spot treatment yet, which is impressive and says a lot about the formula!
The first step is to combine the two ingredients into the formula and shake. You only have to do this once when you get home to mix the formula initially. It comes out in drops which seem like oil but definitely do not make your face oily, just soft. It’s kind of like magic. Similarly impressive is the fact that it exfoliates the skin. I’m used to exfoliators being rough against the skin, but not this one. This feels as if it’s just lotion, yet gets the exfoliating job done. A little goes a long way – just 2-3 drops is all you need to cover your face. Plus, it smells really good!
I instantly fell for this product, you guys! I waited a few weeks to give you a full review and make sure it didn’t give me any weird reactions or breakouts, but it’s been quite the opposite. My skin is definitely more radiant and healthy – looking, the fine lines are less noticeable, and the texture is smooth. Beauty certainly isn’t everything, but knowing that my skin is happy definitely gives me that priceless boost of confidence and one less thing to worry about!
It goes without saying that Kiehl’s Apothecary Preparations has changed my skincare routine for the better and for good. I’m so happy I tried it and I definitely recommend you all giving it a try! The store is really fun and bright to shop around in, and the workers are all so helpful and knowledgeable. If you’re in Boston, stop by the Newbury location and ask for Chelsea – yes, my consultant had the same name as me!
P.S. Kiehl’s has teamed up with Feeding America and the artist duo FAILE this year. They will be donating 100% of their net profit from the FAILE collection to Feeding America food banks across the country. Be sure to consider this collection as holiday gifts for the skincare / beauty lovers in your life! Some examples from the collection are below, such as the body butter which will provide 85 meals, and the tote which will provide 55 meals.
