Where would we walk? Where would we run? If we could stay all day in the sun?
A seashell house fit for Ariel herself! I wish I could sell seashells to live at the infamous AirBnb seashell house in Isla Mujeres, Mexico. I stayed here with travel friend Caroline from SweetCarolinaJ during our Tulum, Mexico trip last November. That entire trip was so filled with adventures that I STILL have a huge backlog of incredible content from the Azulik resort and the photogenic Tulum Instagram spots (and I was only there for about a week)! Our last night of the trip, we traveled back up to Cancun (an hour or so from Tulum), and took an easy ferry to Isla Mujeres.
Isla Mujeres, or island of women, is a smaller island known for its water activities. It has tiny, winding roads, cute little restaurants, and most folks get around in golf carts (though there are cars on the island too). It’s mainly residential with locals, aside from a touristy town center by the ferry dock, but when you get outside of that area you can find stunning beachside houses to rent for a few days. We rented a golf cart and took it south about 20 minutes to get to the seashell house.
The seashell house is even more impressive in person, and the lagoon-like pool in front of it adds to the dreaminess of the whole property. I’m convinced that this is Ariel’s summer house when she comes on land. Everything – and I mean everything is seashell themed here!
First Floor Seashell – Living Room
The inside of the main house has a spiral staircase in the middle, just like a seashell, and the living room area on the first floor has a spiraling lounge area as well. Even the coffee table is set on giant coral, which matches the pillow theme. Every detail is accounted for here, it’s such a feast for the eyes and the dreamer in all of us!
King Titan casually watching over the house. The themed artwork really adds to the dreamy feel here to whisk you away!
Kitchen
The kitchen is the first room you walk into, shared with the living room on the ground level of the main seashell house. We were able to order delivery from a nearby Mexican restaurant that the manager recommended to us!
Upstairs
From the artwork to the furniture, each and every detail is accounted for with a dreamy seashell touch. It’s the perfect getaway because you feel like you’re living in another world!
Master Bed
The master bed was somehow so adorable and so epic at the same time!
Little seashell chairs were so cute too!
Upstairs Bathroom
The most intricate room in the house – all of these are real seashells by the way!
Balcony View
The balcony offers views of both the pool and beach!
In-Law Apartment: The Baby Seashell
I slept in the connecting in-law space conch shell, which I’m now calling the baby seashell, and which was actually my favorite part for two reasons!
First, the bed was made to look like it was nestled within a mermaid-worthy oyster shell. As someone who’s happiest in and around water, this was like a dream and felt so cozy.
Secondly, the bathroom here was absolutely covered in seashells! There must be hundreds of shells, big and little, along the walls, the mirrors, the sink faucet, and most impressively the shower head and adjusting knobs were all seashells! I washed my hands about a hundred times because I was so mesmerized! I definitely 100% took the longest shower of my life here because it was so fun to have the water coming out of a shell. I also blasted old school Shakira, sang along & danced around, and in that moment, everything was alright. You know when someone asks what your happy place is? This is one of mine now. It’s possible I was delirious after a week of adventures and a slight sunburn, but it really doesn’t get more dreamy than a seashell house!
The toughest part of staying here is honestly deciding when to hang out in the seashell house and when to swim in & lounge by the pool, or the beach nearby! I love swimming and the water is this amazing crystal clear aqua, plus they have great pool floaties like this swan! Me and Caroline have some hilarious videos of each other trying to get into and out of the floatie without falling in the water. The property is completely covered with a private wall and locked gate, so you feel very secure staying here and lounging by the pool. It’s an incredible view to stare up at this dreamy seashell house. It’s like something out of Dr. Seuss or Alice in Wonderland, inspiring you and bringing your imagination to life.
The house has little geckos but those are cute, and you have to be extra careful with your trash to keep ants away from the kitchen, but other than that it’s really clean and a great place to stay. I highly recommend coming here and taking in some water activities on the island if you have extra time – though it will be hard to pull yourself away from the seashell house!
